Rights Group Lauds Govt Tribute to Late Vice President
The group wishes for not just a pillar marking the site, but a solid, all-inclusive structure providing visitors a place to express grief, honor the victims and learn from their legacies.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation has commended the Malawian government for the heartfelt and respectful farewell extended to Vice President Dr. Saulos Claus Chilima, who tragically died in a plane crash on June 10 that claimed eight other lives, writes Tionge Hara.
Chilima was en route to the north to attend a funeral when the devastating crash occurred.
CHRR has joined the Chilima family in urging the government to consider erecting a national monument to honor all the plane crash victims.
The group wishes for not just a pillar marking the site, but a solid, all-inclusive structure providing visitors a place to express grief, honor the victims and learn from their legacies.
In a June 19 press statement, CHRR Executive Director Michael Kaiyatsa expressed sadness over violence on June 16 as Chilima's remains were being taken to his home village in Ntcheu.
A private vehicle struck four people, including a pregnant woman, killing them.
"We regret the loss of life and hope that law enforcement agents will investigate these incidents so that justice and accountability for the victims should be ensured," the statement said.
