Youths Empowered Through Green Initiatives

LILONGWE, Malawi- The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has embarked on a journey to advance sustainable and green economic growth for Malawian youth through skills training and empowerment for self-reliance, writes Judgement Katika.
The $2.5 million initiative called Malawi Green Corps is funded by the United Nations Development Programme in partnership with the Malawi government.
"Youths have been disadvantaged regarding unemployment and this green initiative helps alleviate that," said project manager Baxton Chirombo.
The program includes training in waste management and afforestation to impart business skills while conserving the environment.
"The youths learn to make eco-friendly briquettes which brings change in their communities," Chirombo said.
Beneficiary Ellen Chimtengo, chairperson of the Malili Youth Network, said "everyone must be committed to environmental conservation."
The project began in 2021, targeting 10 districts: Lilongwe, Dedza, Salima, Ntcheu, Machinga, Zomba, Mangochi, Blantyre, Karonga and Mzimba.
"The skills help youths handle green businesses and make money," Chilombo said.
Lilongwe council chair Dan Mtayamanja said the project builds young people's capacity for environmentally sustainable enterprises.
The training covers business models and management.
"Youths are now empowered for self-reliance," Mtayamanja said.
The project interventions include waste management and tree planting.
