Youths Benefit from Green Training

NKHATA BAY, Malawi - Over 50 youths among some of the members and volunteers for Go Green Save Environment (GGSE) Malawi have benefited from a refresher training that the local NGO organizes on how best they can protect the environment from harm, writes Rebecca Kaunda.
The Nkhata Bay-based organization has been running its projects on environmental issues for over seven years across the country.
With an effort to combat issues that harm the environment, the training comes as a response to empowering the youth across the country to take action in dealing with environmental barriers for a greener place.
"As an organization we want to equip our members and volunteers with knowledge that will help them understand the purpose of this organization. We want them to set a good example when it comes to protecting the environment as they go to their various places," explains Programs Director Ethel Mwafulirwa.
The training has impacted many of the participants, mostly for those who have joined the organization lately.
"Recently we have been graced with a lot of volunteers in our organization, so with this one-day training it has given them a room to learn what we have been doing as an organization over the various projects we are implementing," added Mwafulirwa.
She further says they expect all participants to implement all green practices in their various communities in terms of what they have learned from the training.
One participant from Mzuzu Chapter, Anganly Ngonga, commended the development saying her eyes have been opened and now she has a full understanding of the organization's purpose.
"As a country we are good at implementing policies but we are failing to take action. With the knowledge equipped to us, I'm ready to take possible action that will make a change in my community," Ngonga said.
Meanwhile, another participant from Livingstonia, Kenneth Nyirenda, has vowed to spread the importance of environmental protection to every community member in his locality.
