Youth Urged to Contest in 2025 Malawi Elections
The 2025 tripartite elections in Malawi will elect the president, members of parliament and local government councilors.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi— An aspiring parliamentary candidate has urged youth in Malawi to contest in the 2025 general elections, calling for greater inclusion of young people in the country's development, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Ben Khuleya, who is vying for the Chikwawa Nkombezi constituency, made the appeal on Sunday at Goma Primary School during the finals of the Ben Khuleya K2 million soccer trophy.
"For a long time, the youth have been sidelined from active participation, hence in 2025 they should be given a chance," said Khuleya, expressing confidence in his own prospects.
"I lost with a narrow margin to the incumbent MP Abida Sidik Mia by only 400 votes."
However, Khuleya acknowledged that the Chikwawa Nkombezi area still faces numerous challenges requiring attention, including poor road infrastructure that becomes impassable during rains, cutting off communities.
"The locals require good roads to access services easily throughout the year," he said, adding that some villages lack access to safe, clean water, posing health risks like cholera.
Khuleya assured residents of better services if elected to parliament next year.
Dickson Gama, a Miseu Folo resident, commended Khuleya for the youth soccer tournament, saying, "Time has come for the involvement of youth in politics for their participation."
