Youth Organization Urges Health Awareness to Combat Diabetes
YISDO officials said they plan to continue their health education initiatives throughout the region, focusing on youth engagement and community awareness.
MZUZU, Malawi— A youth development organisation marked World Diabetes Day on Thursday by calling on young Malawians to prioritise their health amid rising diabetes cases in the country, writes Alinafe Sambo.
The Youth for Inclusive and Sustainable Development Organization (YISDO) hosted an awareness event at Zolozolo Primary School in Mzuzu to educate youth about diabetes prevention and management.
"The cases of diabetes have claimed many lives in the country, and it is vital for non-governmental organizations to work hand in hand with the government to educate communities and young people about diabetes," said YISDO Executive Director Ayasida Koyi in an interview with African Brief Online.
Koyi emphasized that young people must understand the nature of diabetes and prevention methods. He urged those already diagnosed with diabetes to closely follow medical guidance.
Linda Singini, representing the Non-Communicable Disease Coordinator for Mzimba district, stressed individual responsibility in health management.
"It is the responsibility of every Malawian to take care of their health so that together we can reduce diabetes cases in the country," Singini said.
The event, held under the theme "Diabetes and Wellbeing," aimed to provide a platform for diabetes awareness and support those living with the condition. Organizers focused on creating a global dialogue about diabetes prevention and management strategies.
YISDO officials said they plan to continue their health education initiatives throughout the region, focusing on youth engagement and community awareness.
