LILONGWE, Malawi— A youth organisation in Lilongwe pledged to plant 7,000 trees this season as part of national efforts to restore forests and combat climate change, writes Benson Kamonjola.
Tingathe Youth Organization has already planted 2,700 trees in Area 36, contributing to Malawi's goal of 40 million new trees by April 15.
"Malawi now is frequently facing natural disasters; one of the reasons is that people have destroyed the environment by cutting trees," said Ronald Gondwe, the organisation's chief executive officer.
The group also produces fuel briquettes from waste materials to reduce reliance on wood fuel.
"As youths, it is our responsibility to conserve the environment because we make up a greater percentage of the country's population," Gondwe said.
The initiative aligns with the forestry department's national campaign launched in December under the theme "restore forests and land to secure food production."
