Youth Advocacy Platform Trains Youth, Journalists on Mental Health Awareness
Youth Advocacy Platform conducts training to promote mental health awareness, addressing the alarming number of suicide cases in Malawi.
LILONGWE, MALAWI — The Youth Advocacy Platform (YAP) organised a one-day training session in Lilongwe to equip youth and journalists with knowledge on the importance of promoting mental health awareness under the "Breaking the Silence" campaign, writes Mercy Matonga.
Elias Mambo, Executive Director of YAP, expressed concern over the increasing number of suicide cases, particularly among men.
Mambo emphasised the need for men to speak up and share their challenges with others.
"A problem shared is a problem half solved. This is why we are training peer educators to provide support to those facing challenges that can lead to mental breakdowns. Breaking the silence is crucial to preserving the lives of individuals on the brink of giving up," stated Mambo.
The Moroccan ambassador to Malawi, Adelkader Naji, underscored the global nature of mental health challenges and expressed sadness over the rising number of suicide cases in Malawi.
Naji emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address mental health issues.
"Mental health challenges are also prevalent among the youth. It is crucial to monitor them through mediums they are interested in, such as social media. The media has a significant role to play in reaching out to them," Naji added.
According to the Malawi Police Service (MPS), 115 people committed suicide between January and March of this year, with 97 percent of the cases involving men.
The alarming statistics highlight the urgent need to prioritise mental health support and awareness in the country.
