Youngest Botswana MP Resigns, Rumors Swirl
In his letter, he expressed gratitude for the support he received from constituents and colleagues.
GABORONE, Botswana - Yandani Boko, the youngest member of parliament in Botswana's history, has resigned from his position, sparking speculation about his motives, writes Tirelo Nkwe.
Boko, a 32-year-old lawyer elected in 2019 under the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) banner, tendered his resignation to the Speaker of Parliament recently.
In his letter, he expressed gratitude for the support he received from constituents and colleagues.
Unconfirmed reports suggest Boko stepped down due to internal conflicts and sabotage within the UDC.
Boko himself declined to comment on these rumors.
Boko's resignation comes just months before Botswana's national elections. Sources close to Boko claim the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) may have offered him a more prominent position.
This move deals a blow to the UDC's hopes of retaining the Mahalapye East constituency.
Batswana voters are left questioning Boko's decision and its impact on the upcoming elections.
