Young Killers Clinch K700,000 Trophy

CHIKWAWA, Malawi - Young Killers Football Club are the K700,000 Simbeko Investments Trophy champions after defeating Jombo Football Club 5-4 on penalties Sunday at St. Montfort Catholic Primary School ground, locally known as Villa Park, in Nchalo, Chikwawa, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The two teams were tied 1-1 after regulation and extra time before Young Killers prevailed on penalties.
"I will soon launch another trophy for teams in Chikwawa and Nsanje to compete for as in the duo districts I have businesses," said Kodo Mbesa, proprietor of Simbeko Investments, the tournament's sponsor.
Young Killers took an early lead in the 3rd minute on a goal by captain Kondwani Neva.
Jombo equalized in the 27th minute through Emmanuel Moyo after good work from Bonnex Lloyd, Phillip Matias and Matias Khuleya.
The teams remained tied 1-1 at halftime. Despite substitutions, the deadlock continued through the end of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time.
In the decisive penalty shootout, Young Killers converted all five of their attempts while Jombo missed one when Manuel Mtema's shot was saved.
Young Killers claimed the top prize of K250,000 plus the trophy. Jombo received K150,000 as runner-up.
Third place Staff Rangers and fourth place Makanga FC got K80,000 and K50,000 respectively.
Twenty teams participated in the K700,000 tournament sponsored by Simbeko Investments.
