Young Graduate, 24, Announces Bid for Parliament Seat in Malawi
As the 2025 election approaches, Goodwell's candidacy represents a growing trend of young people seeking to enter Malawi's political arena and contribute to national progress.
LILONGWE, Malawi— A 24-year-old university graduate has announced her intention to run for a parliamentary seat in Malawi's 2025 election, citing a desire to promote education and economic empowerment among youth and women, writes Zonkey Kaziyenda.
Shira Goodwell, a recent graduate of the University of Malawi with a degree in social and economic history, plans to contest for the Mude constituency in Lilongwe district.
"I want to promote education among young people in my area because many are involved in immoral practices due to a lack of education," Goodwell said.
"These young people are the future leaders of our country and need encouragement to refrain from risky behaviours and focus on productive activities that can contribute to national development."
Goodwell, who hails from Chizu Village in Traditional Authority Kabudula, said her decision to enter politics was influenced by government and non-governmental organizations' calls for increased youth participation in political processes.
The aspiring politician has launched an initiative to mobilize funds for soft loans to help young women start small businesses.
She also plans to establish construction projects in her area to create job opportunities and reduce unemployment.
Goodwell urged other young people, especially girls, to overcome their fears and participate in the upcoming tripartite election. She emphasized the importance of youth showcasing their abilities and playing crucial roles in Malawi's socio-economic development.
Her campaign focuses on addressing issues such as early marriages, which she says are prevalent in her area due to a lack of support and motivation for young girls, perpetuating poverty.
