YONECO Facilitates Treatment for Burned Orphan in Nsanje
YONECO's intervention has ensured that the orphaned boy receives necessary medical attention for his burn injuries, highlighting the organization's commitment to child welfare in the district.
NSANJE, Malawi - Youth Network and Counseling (YONECO) has taken a 14-year-old orphan, Baba Peterson, to Nsanje District Hospital for treatment of burns he sustained on both hands early last month at Bangula Trading Centre in the district, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Jacqueline Holla, YONECO's District Coordinator in Nsanje, confirmed on Easter Monday that the boy has been admitted to the hospital.
"Upon receiving a report on the boy's condition and situation, we collaborated with other stakeholders, went to Bangula, and managed to take him for treatment," Holla said.
Sub-Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, the spokeswoman for Nsanje Police Station, concurred with Holla, stating that the boy sustained injuries through burns, which if left untreated, might lead to amputation.
However, she revealed that her office did not receive any report on the incident when it occurred on March 10, 2024.
"I have just learned about this together with YONECO as we were working on other Gender-Based Violence (GBV) matters," Zalakoma said.
Stella Kalenga, the boy's guardian, known as Sister Fire, said the patient has been treated and is responding to the medication.
"The wounds have cleared, removing what was coagulated on the burns. We have been advised to wait until Tuesday, April 2, 2024, to meet with doctors for further diagnosis," Kalenga added.
Meanwhile, MacPhillip Walter, the Child Protection Worker for Traditional Authority Mbenje, expressed delight that Baba Peterson has finally been taken to the hospital for treatment.
