YAS Urges Chakwera to Avoid "Interfering" in Corruption Cases
Youth and Society calls on President Chakwera to refrain from "influencing" law enforcement in the fight against corruption.
Mzuzu, Malawi — Youth and Society (YAS) has appealed to President Lazarus Chakwera to refrain from allegedly interfering with law enforcement agencies in their efforts to combat corruption in the country, writes Tionge Hara.
During a press briefing held in Mzuzu on Monday, YAS Executive Director Charles Kajoloweka expressed his concerns, stating that he possesses evidence of President Chakwera's alleged interference in cases involving some high-profile cases, including the botched K750 million AIP deal.
He stressed that the country cannot progress if there is no accountability and swift action taken against those involved in corruption.
Kajoloweka did not show the evidence to the media, but he claimed to have it. When asked if he would show the evidence in court, he said yes, the evidence is there.
In response to YAS's claims, Government Spokesperson Moses Kunkuyu highlighted that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) operates independently and without political interference. He urged YAS to allow the ACB to pronounce itself on the matter.
"We have a government that is committed, we have the political will from the president, and we trust and have hope in the ACB to do what they have done with other cases of suspected offenses," Kunkuyu stated.
YAS urges President Chakwera to respect the independence of law enforcement agencies, allowing them to carry out their duties without undue influence.
