Malawi-During an extraordinary full council meeting for Nsanje on Friday, it was established that the area of Senior Chief Chimombo in Nsanje is lagging behind in many areas of development, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
This prompted World Vision International (WVI) to roll out new projects in the area for the next 12 years, starting this year.
According to Programs Manager for WVI, Samson Semu, research conducted by the organization in 2021–2022 found that the area was behind in agriculture, child protection, education, health, water, and sanitation.
The organization chose the area because 33% of the population has no access to basic services.
In another development, council members in Nsanje led a clean-up exercise by slashing the surroundings of the District Commissioner's office on Friday.
The Chair of the Council, Rose Makiyi, led the exercise after attending the meeting, stating that it was an exercise where communities voluntarily clean any place of their choice.
Traditional Authority Makoko expressed his pleasure in participating in the exercise, stating that it was not his first time doing such an exercise in the district.
Councillor for Chigumukire Ward, Honest Sande, urged communities to participate in the exercise, which is conducted every month in the second week, set aside by the Head of State, Dr Lazarous Chakwera.
