World Vision Hosts Global Event to Aid Children With Disabilities
The gathering will provide a platform to build networks, share insights and promote collaboration among government agencies, NGOs, donors and private sector partners.
LILONGWE, Malawi— World Vision Malawi is hosting a five-day global learning event starting Monday to share knowledge on inclusive education, case management for children with disabilities, and empowering marginalized groups, writes Wendi Mkandawire.
Charles Chimombo, Director of Operations at World Vision Malawi, said participants from various countries will share experiences on promoting the well-being of children with disabilities and other vulnerable youth.
"Recently, we secured $3 million funding for a project called 'Able to Fly,' aimed at helping children with disabilities in Malawi achieve their full potential," Chimombo said.
The project operates in five districts: Dedza, Ntchisi, Kasungu, Dowa and Mzimba.
The gathering will provide a platform to build networks, share insights and promote collaboration among government agencies, NGOs, donors and private sector partners.
It will highlight successful practices and strategies to address the needs of individuals with disabilities.
Jean Sendeza, Malawi's Minister of Gender and Disabilities, said the event will help the government learn from other countries about protecting children with disabilities.
"In Malawi, we have a law on persons with disabilities, passed and assented to by President Chakwera," Sendeza said.
"This bill is just on paper. We want to act on how children with disabilities should be protected and cared for."
Globally, the project aims to improve the lives of 60,000 children with disabilities by 2027, including 10,000 in Malawi.
The first phase has reached 2,566 children, including 1,121 with disabilities, across the five target districts.
