World Bank Appoints Firas Raad as New Country Manager for Malawi
Raad's expertise is expected to contribute to the World Bank's efforts in boosting economic growth, reducing poverty, and improving living standards in Malawi.
WASHINGTON— The World Bank Group has named Firas Raad as its new Country Manager for Malawi, the institution announced Tuesday, writes Winston Mwale.
Raad, a Jordanian national with over 27 years of development and health policy experience, will oversee the World Bank's $3.39 billion portfolio in Malawi, consisting of 30 lending operations.
Based in Lilongwe, Raad brings extensive experience from previous roles as Country Manager for South Sudan, Malaysia, and Kuwait.
He has also served in leadership positions with the United Nations and the Jordanian Government.
Raad holds a doctorate and master's degree in International Health Policy and Economics from Harvard School of Public Health, as well as degrees from Johns Hopkins University.
The World Bank's portfolio in Malawi includes 22 national projects and 8 regional projects, complemented by $161.19 million in trust funds.
This appointment comes as Malawi continues to face economic challenges and seeks support for development initiatives.
The World Bank, through its International Development Association (IDA), has been a significant source of assistance for low-income countries like Malawi, providing grants and low to zero-interest loans for various projects.
