Women Entrepreneurs Win Grants at Standard Bank's Phuka Pitch Night

LILONGWE, MALAWI— Three women entrepreneurs received agriculture grants totalling K26.7 million at Standard Bank's Phuka Pitch Night on Thursday, highlighting support for women in agribusiness, writes AfricaBrief Reporter.
Mercy Esau of Tilime Honey Produce won the top prize of 10 million kwacha, with Chimwemwe Samson of Tatiya Foods and Rosette Chakachadza of Hopmac receiving 8.7 million kwacha each.
The event marked the graduation of 32 women entrepreneurs from the 2024 Phuka Incubator, a collaborative initiative between Standard Bank, GIZ, Winrock International, and the United States Department of Agriculture.
Esau plans to address water sustainability in honey production.
"I am excited but at the same time this is a challenge for me to work harder to meet the growing demand for honey on local and international markets," she said.
Graham Chipande, Standard Bank's Head of Business and Commercial Banking, emphasized the importance of supporting women entrepreneurs.
"Agriculture plays a vital role in our nation's growth, and women have the power to revolutionize this industry," he stated.
Lilia Tverdun from Winrock International highlighted the program's significance in promoting economic inclusivity.
"This initiative is essential for inclusive economic growth, enabling women to contribute towards economic development," she said.
