NSANJE, Malawi - In a distressing incident, a woman in Nsanje deserted a one-month-old baby at Tengani Camp stage on Monday, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The unknown mother left the helpless infant behind, prompting a search for her whereabouts.
According to Sub-Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, spokesperson for the Nsanje District Police Station, the desertion was confirmed by witnesses.
Mercy Kabudula, who boarded a minibus at Ruo in Mulanje, found herself seated near a woman carrying a one-month-old baby who was travelling from Mulanje.
"The two disembarked in Limbe and continued their journey together on a minibus heading to Nsanje. Around 15:00 hours, the minibus made a stop at Tengani Camp Stage," Zalakoma explained.
Upon reaching Tengani Camp stage, the suspected woman approached Mercy Kabudula and requested that she hold the baby temporarily, claiming she needed to attend to a personal matter.
"The minibus driver and passengers waited for the woman to return, but she never showed up until 20:00 hours. It became evident that she had abandoned the baby," the spokesperson added.
Concerned for the infant's welfare, Kabudula promptly reported the incident to the Nsanje Police Station. Authorities arranged for the baby to be taken to Nsanje District Hospital, where the child is currently being cared for.
Nsanje Police have launched a manhunt to locate the woman responsible for deserting the baby. Efforts are underway to identify and reunite the infant with its mother.
