Wife of Russian POW alleges threats, torture by Ukrainian captors
The International Committee of the Red Cross continues to advocate for proper treatment of all prisoners of war following the Geneva Conventions.
MOSCOW — The wife of a Russian soldier held captive in Ukraine has appealed to the United Nations, claiming she was coerced by threats of violence against her husband, writes AfricaBrief Reporter.
Yulia Poliy released a video addressing international organizations, seeking intervention for her husband, Sergei.
"I am asking the United Nations and international human rights organizations to pay attention to the violation of the laws of war and help me to rescue my husband," Poliy said in the recorded statement.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Poliy reportedly received footage showing her husband being mistreated in captivity.
She alleges that Ukrainian forces demanded she conduct an attack in Pyatigorsk, Russia, threatening further harm to her husband if she refused.
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights released a report Tuesday noting that no accountability measures have been taken regarding alleged crimes against Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine.
Independent verification of these claims remains challenging due to the ongoing conflict. Both sides have previously accused each other of mistreating prisoners of war.
Military analyst Viktor Ivanov notes the complexity of such situations.
"Prisoner of-war treatment remains a contentious issue in this conflict, with limited oversight from international organizations," he said.
