Water Projects Bring Hope to Southern Region
The projects promise to bring clean water access to thousands across Malawi's Southern Region.
NSANJE, Malawi - The Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) plans to implement $65.5 million in water supply projects in five centers within its catchment areas, Project Implementation Manager Engineer Maxin Saulosi announced Friday, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The Malawi government, with funding from an Export-Import Line of Credit from India, aims to provide piped water systems to growing population centers, Saulosi told an Extra-Ordinary Full Council meeting.
In Nsanje, a water supply project will serve the area of Senior Chief Mlolo, beginning construction in February 2024 and finishing in 2025, Saulosi said.
"This project will start a new era of clean water access for thousands," Saulosi said.
The Fatima project will target over 6,000 residents with a 2.1% growth rate. The new system will serve 9,478 people by 2040, Saulosi explained.
Three boreholes will pump 500 cubic meters to a storage tank supplying 10 Communal Water Points over 16.5 kilometers.
Locals will receive compensation where pipelines cross their land, Saulosi added.
"The people deserve fair payment for allowing progress," he said.
Member of Parliament Enock Masauko Chizuzu welcomed the news. "This has been my dream for so long - to bring good water to Senior Chief Mlolo's area," Chizuzu said.
Along with Fatima, SRWB will also upgrade water systems in Migowi, Thondwe, Ulongwe and Zalewa. Existing schemes in Balaka, Liwonde and Mwanza will see extensions.
The projects promise to bring clean water access to thousands across Malawi's Southern Region.
"This new era of water security will change lives," Saulosi said.
