Water Bills Defaulters Worry Nsanje's Tengani Water Association
Margrate Baton from the area said that there are some areas where they are still waiting for the piped water.
NSANJE, Malawi— Authorities at Tengani Water Users Association (WUA) in Nsanje have expressed concern that there are more customers who are not paying water bills promptly, a development which is affecting their operations, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
A supervisor at WUA, Blessings Bika, said on Tuesday that over 35% of the clients are not paying their bills amicably.
"We have a number of challenges such as broken pipes and other materials. Even expansion of our catchment area requires materials," Bika said.
He said the failure of paying bills by some customers is greatly affecting their work of supplying water in the area. The WUA is not funded by the government as it solely depends on the clients' water bill payments.
Bika says he would like to engage traditional leaders and Area Development Committees (ADCs) for Traditional Authority Tengani to find interventions so that defaulters are paying their bills on time.
Margrate Baton from the area said that there are some areas where they are still waiting for the piped water.
"We also need piped water in our villages as our friends are free from drawing water from the Shire river," Baton alleged.
She said WUA was introduced in the area but it has not reached many areas.
