Wanderers, Kamuzu Barracks Open Season with 1-1 Draw
The new Super League season is underway with an unpredictable start as the league's top clubs aim to claim the championship.
BLANTYRE, Malawi— Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Kamuzu Barracks kicked off the 2024 TNM Super League season with a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium, writes Happy Valirani.
Christopher Kumwembe put the home side Wanderers ahead in the 29th minute with a headed goal off a Stanley Sanudi free kick.
But substitute Zeliati Nkhoma equalized for Kamuzu Barracks in the 71st minute as the teams had to settle for a point each.
"It was not a bad game, we created chances, we could go in the last third easily but we didn't capitalize on our chances. I have to accept that the luck was not on our side," said Wanderers head coach Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan.
"We were disturbed by the system that our opponents were using, they were playing long and high balls and my boys resorted to their style but they lost concentration in the process."
Ramadhan remained upbeat despite the draw in the opening match.
"This is our first game, I have seen some positives that the team is able to create chances and the future is bright."
For Kamuzu Barracks coach Charles Kamanga, collecting a point on the road against the powerful Wanderers was a positive start.
"I'm impressed with the one point that we have collected away from home and securing a point against Mighty Mukuru Wanderers is not an easy task," Kamanga said.
"We missed some three clear chances that could have given us maximum points if we had converted them."
After the first round of matches, newly promoted Creck Sporting Club leads the standings with three points, level with Silver Strikers, Karonga United, Mzuzu City Hammers, Moyale Barracks and FOMO FC. But Creck Sporting Club has a superior goal difference after beating Mighty Tigers 3-1.
Dedza Dynamos, FB Nyasa Big Bullets, Wanderers and Kamuzu Barracks all have one point each.
