BLANTYRE, Malawi— Wisdom Mpinganjira's early goal propelled Mighty Mukuru Wanderers to a crucial 1-0 victory over FOMO FC in a TNM Super League match Wednesday at Kamuzu Stadium, writes Happy Valirani.
The 8th-minute strike proved decisive as Wanderers reduced their deficit behind league leaders Silver Strikers to five points.
Silver was held to a goalless draw by Bangwe All Stars in Balaka on the same day.
"We thank the boys for working very hard," Wanderers coach Meke Mwase said.
"We started very well in the first half, we scored early and that is what our game plan was. We are happy that we have collected the maximum three points."
Silver Strikers lead the standings with 49 points from 21 games, while Wanderers have 44 points from the same number of matches.
The defeat leaves FOMO FC in 13th place with 22 points from 22 games. Despite the loss, FOMO coach Elvis Kafoteka remained optimistic about his team's prospects.
"It was a balanced affair. Unfortunately, we gave them an early goal," Kafoteka said.
"My boys were shocked with the goal and even the morale went down. We have a good team. If we continue playing the way we have played today, I am sure we are going to survive in the Super League."
