Wanderers Crush Chipoka United 10-1 in Castel Cup Match
Wanderers remain in contention for both the Super League title and the Castel Cup.
BLANTYRE, Malawi— Mighty Mukuru Wanderers advanced to the round of 16 in the 2024 Ibongetse Castel Challenge Cup with a commanding 10-1 victory over amateur side Chipoka United on Tuesday at Kamuzu Stadium, writes Happy Valirani.
Clement Nyondo led the Nomads with four goals, while Gaddie Chirwa added two. Wisdom Mpinganjira, Wallace Adam, Isaac Kaliati and Francisco Madinga each contributed one goal.
Isaac Kajam scored Chipoka's lone goal from the penalty spot.
The win helped Wanderers bounce back from their weekend exit from the Airtel Top 8 tournament, where they lost 1-0 to Silver Strikers in the semifinals.
"It was a very good game although we started very low," Wanderers assistant coach Bob Mpinganjira said.
"When you are coming from a loss, it is always difficult to play, but the players worked very hard."
Chipoka United coach Ganizani Chilunda acknowledged the gap between his amateur team and their top-flight opponents.
"We were playing against a very big team," he said. "We have learned a lot of things from our opponents, both technical and on the field of play."
