Veteran Defender Njewa Calls for Football Development in Likoma
Njewa credited hard work and commitment for helping him secure a job with the Malawi Defense Force (MDF), where he now serves as a soldier.
LIKOMA, Malawi -- As he prepares for his final season, veteran defender Mtopijo Njewa, an outstanding player in the TNM Super League since 2007 and a seven-time man of the match winner with Moyale Barracks, has called for greater investment in football development in his native Likoma District, writes Oliver Malibisa.
In a phone interview, Njewa, who plans to retire from active football after this season, said, "Now it's time for the district to produce quality players that will play for [the] national team (Flames)."
He pleaded with tournament organizers in the district to implement interventions that will help develop football, rather than solely focusing on their own gains.
Njewa credited hard work and commitment for helping him secure a job with the Malawi Defense Force (MDF), where he now serves as a soldier. He assured fellow players that such dedication can open doors.
While Likoma has produced quality players like Flames and Nyasa Big Bullets striker Ephraim Kondowe, Moyale Barracks midfielder Robert Mphezi, and Nyasa Big Bullets reserve goalkeeper Austin Chirambo, Njewa believes more can be done to nurture talent from the district.
