MZUZU, Malawi— In a tightly contested election, Kondwani Brian Nyasulu of the UTM party has reclaimed his position as mayor of Mzuzu City, securing 9 votes to edge out Malawi Congress Party's Desire Nyirenda, who received 7 votes, writes Tionge Hara.
Nyasulu, who previously served as mayor from 2019 to 2022, returns to the role with experience and familiarity.
His victory signals strong support among councilors and confidence in his leadership abilities.
In a historic development, Monica Simwaka was elected as deputy mayor with 10 votes, becoming the first woman to hold this position in Mzuzu City.
Her competitors, Hiwet Mkandawire and Tonny Mwenitete, each received 3 votes.
During his acceptance speech, Mayor Nyasulu emphasized unity and progress, stating, "This is not the time for politics; it's time for development. Let's work on the ground and deliver to the people."
He called for collaboration among council members to focus on Mzuzu's growth and improvement.
