UTM Party to Hold Elective Conference, Honours Late Leader's Legacy

BLANTYRE, Malawi— The United Transformation Movement (UTM) party announced Tuesday it will hold its elective conference on Nov. 17 to select new leadership ahead of Malawi's 2025 general elections, writes Mayamiko Phiri.
UTM National Publicity Secretary Felix Njawala made the announcement during a press briefing in Blantyre, attended by several senior party officials.
"We are doing this to make sure that UTM is much stronger and also that the vision which was left by Chilima is fulfilled," Njawala said.
The conference location is yet to be determined, with southern, eastern, or northern regions under consideration.
The party's acting president, Michael Usi, chaired the meeting that decided on the convention.
Secretary General Patricia Kaliati warned party members against wearing UTM clothing at government meetings, emphasizing that the party is not in alliance with any political group.
Penjani Fredokiss Kalua, the party's youth director, announced that candle light memorial services honoring the late Chilima will resume on June 10, 2025.
He also revealed a 50% discount on convention fees for women and youth candidates.
The convention's theme is "SKC legacy beyond 2025: building a future of fairness, equality and transformation," reflecting the party's commitment to its late leader's vision.
