UTM Councillor Elected New Council Chair in Nkhata Bay, Malawi

NKHATA BAY, Malawi— The Nkhata Bay district Council elected United Transformation Movement (UTM) Councillor Joseph Thula as its new chairperson Tuesday at an elective council meeting, writes Rabecca Kaunda.
Thula, representing Mpamba ward, secured the position with seven out of 12 votes cast in the second round.
The election followed a tie in the first round, defeating independent councillor Patrick Manda of Chitheka ward.
In his acceptance speech, Thula promised to prioritize completing stalled projects and promote teamwork in developing the district.
"As chairperson of the council, it is my goal to transform the district by utilizing resources which the district has," Thula said.
Independent Councillor Brown Chizeze of Usisya ward was elected vice council chairperson.
Nkhata Bay District Commissioner Rodgers Newa advised the newly elected officials to supervise and provide oversight to the council's secretariat.
"Provide policy and guidelines to the team to achieve good service delivery," Newa said.
