Uranium Mine Project Gains Community Support Through Transparent Stakeholder Engagement

KARONGA, Malawi— A uranium mining project in northern Malawi is receiving praise for its commitment to community relations and environmental assessment, consultants said Tuesday, writes Lusekero Mhango.
C12 Consultancy commended Lotus Africa Limited (LAL) for its transparent approach to developing the Kayelekera uranium mine, noting significant improvements from previous management practices.
Robert Hartly-Louis, the consultancy's senior environmental manager, said LAL has successfully addressed historical tensions by prioritizing stakeholder involvement during the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) process.
"We are pleased that Lotus Africa Ltd has learned from the past and prioritized stakeholder involvement at every stage of the process," Hartly-Louis said.
The project aims to resume uranium production in the second half of 2025, with plans to employ 446 Malawians, representing 85% of the total workforce.
John Mwenelupembe, LAL's geologist, pledged the company's commitment to implementing all ESIA recommendations.
"We are dedicated to ensuring every recommendation is followed," he said.
The stakeholder meeting, which included local media representatives, highlighted the company's efforts to integrate community concerns into project planning.
