Unsafe Sex Drives High HIV Rates Among Youth in Likoma
Stakeholders blame youth for engaging in unsafe sex practices, contributing to the high HIV rates in the island district.
LIKOMA ISLAND, Malawi — Stakeholders express concern as Likoma district reports the highest HIV prevalence in northern Malawi, with low condom use among youth cited as a major factor, writes Mercy Phiri.
The issue was highlighted at a youth workshop held Friday at a local youth hall.
Keith Tewesa, Likoma's Youth Friendly Health Services coordinator, said island youths have been avoiding these services, contributing to the emergency.
A 2024 assessment report on nutrition and HIV prevalence shows Likoma at 6.6%, followed by Nkhata Bay at 6.5%. Mzuzu city records 8% among the population aged 15-49.
"It's pathetic that Likoma, the smallest district, can top the highest populated districts. This clearly shows we youth are not doing well in combating the virus spread," said Felix Banda, District Youth Officer for Likoma.
Attrick Mnthali, Likoma Youth Network Coordinator, revealed that many youths consider pregnancy more dangerous than HIV, opting for contraceptive pills over condoms.
"We encourage youth to adopt modern youth-friendly health services available in the district," Mnthali said.

There's a real risk of a full blown resurgence of high generalized infection rates among young people and adults alike. Lack of funding at grassroots level and reduced capacity of communities are to blame.
