Unopposed Ngwira Pledges Beach Soccer Revival as Chimbalanga Steps Down
The new leadership will face immediate challenges in developing infrastructure and securing corporate partnerships to advance the sport's growth in Malawi.
LILONGWE, Malawi—Force Ngwira, Ripple Africa's country director, emerged as the sole candidate for Beach Soccer Association of Malawi's presidency after incumbent Gift Chimbalanga announced he won't seek re-election next month, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
As nomination deadlines approach this Saturday, Ngwira stands unopposed for the top position in the February 8 elections, promising to transform the sport that "has stagnated for years due to poor administration."
"Our sport lacks adequate beach soccer infrastructure even though we have amazing high-quality talent," Ngwira said.
"The best way forward is to pursue corporate Malawi and then ask the government to top up."
Sports analyst Willy Chabwinja endorsed Ngwira's candidacy, citing his extensive experience in sports administration from the grassroots to the national level.
"With the current beach soccer situation in the country, we need someone of Ngwira's calibre," Chabwinja said.
"The challenges require bold leadership and uncompromised leaders."
Five affiliate organizations have already backed Ngwira's bid for the presidency.
The association is currently vetting candidates ahead of next month's executive committee elections in Lilongwe.
