University of Malawi (UNIMA) law student has drowned in Nakawale River in Mangochi after stepping on a slippery stone when he was bathing.
Speaking in an interview with AfricaBrief, Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer, Amina Tepani Daudi, identified the victim as Noel Kazembe, 26.
She disclosed that the incident occurred yesterday on 16 October 2021 at Nakawale River in Traditional Authority Katuli in Mangochi.
Sub Inspector Tepani said the victim went to bathe in the river in preparation for prayers as he came to Katuli for a long week evangelical campaign.
She said, unfortunately, he drowned in the river after stepping on a slippery stone and fell on a deeper part of the river.
"It is reported that on 10 October 2021, Kazembe and fellow students belonging to Seventh Day Adventist Church visited Katuli area for a week-long evangelism campaign,” said the police PRO.
“On this fateful day, Kazembe and his fellow students went to bath at the said river in preparation for prayers. In the process, he stepped on a slippery stone and fell on a deeper part of the river where he drowned.”
She said after seeing this, his colleagues shouted for help and villagers jumped into the waters and retrieved him.
He was rushed to Katuli Health Centre where death was pronounced upon arrival.
In the meantime, the dead body has been taken to Mangochi District Hospital Mortuary for the postmortem process.
Kazembe hailed from Ndola village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba.
