DEDZA, Malawi— The Malawi Relief UK Fund is set to build 100 houses for poor Malawians in the Mjini community under Senior Chief Sultan Tambala in Dedza, writes Gloria Masanza-Kanyang’wa.
The housing project, which will be carried out in Mjini, within a 5-kilometre radius, comes following a request by Senior Group Headman Chibwana Mlozi, real name Kayisi Sadala, to the UK Fund.
According to Sadala, the construction work is expected to last at least two months, considering that almost 100 workers have arrived in the community to handle the work.
“We asked for this support after noticing the plight of many of our people in the area who do not have decent houses due to their financial status,” disclosed Mlozi.
“Beneficiaries for this project have been selected randomly, based on their needs and ability to contribute bricks and sand, because the UK Relief Fund has contributed other items such as cement, roofing materials, window and door frames, among others.”
According to Senior Group Chibwana Mlozi, each of the beneficiaries will have a basic but decent two-bedroom house built for them within two months.
“I am hopeful that upon completion, the project will transform the area as many needy people and households who would otherwise not afford a decent house will now own one. We commend the sponsors for this kind gesture,” said Mlozi.
At the handover ceremony for the housing materials, each household received its own set of materials in preparation for the start of the construction work.
One of the beneficiaries, Mercy Magombo from Maunda Village, T/A Tambala, was all praise for the project, saying this is a dream come true for her.
“In my lifetime, I never thought anything like this could happen to me. I live in a dilapidated house, and this is a dream come true for me, to own a decent house. I am grateful to all those who have put in resources for this project,” said Magombo.
She added that the elderly and underprivileged in the area will benefit from the project.
The Malawi Relief UK Fund is a non-profit organisation that provides humanitarian aid to Malawi.
The organisation has been working in Malawi for over 20 years and has helped to improve the lives of millions of people.
The housing project is part of the organization's broader goal of reducing poverty and improving living conditions in Malawi.
The organisation hopes that the project will help improve the quality of life for the beneficiaries and make them more resilient to future shocks.
