Two men arrested for alleged murder in Chikwawa

CHIKWAWA, Malawi-Police in Chikwawa are keeping in custody two men for separate murders that took place in the district last week, writes Comfort Bulangete.
In the first incident, a 27-year-old man from Vilamau village, Traditional Authority Ngabu, has been arrested for allegedly killing his 23-year-old wife, Luwiza Leonard, from Maluwati village, on suspicion that she was seeing another man.
The police report says the couple had an argument on June 3, which escalated into a fight. The suspect then allegedly hit Luwiza on the head with a stone, killing her instantly.
He then allegedly took a panga knife and cut off her head, breasts, and private parts.
He allegedly hid the head and body in Chidima Forest and threw the breasts and private parts in the toilet.
The suspect was arrested on June 8 and led police to the forest where the head was found. The body is still missing.
In the second incident, a 20-year-old man from Katomba village, Traditional Authority Ngabu, has been arrested for allegedly killing his grandmother, who was from Billy village.
The suspect, Mateyu Mateyu, is said to have allegedly strangled his grandmother to death on the night of June 2, on suspicion that she was a witch.
The body was discovered the following morning, and the suspect was arrested and confessed to the murder.
Both suspects are in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
The police have condemned the two murders and have urged members of the public to resolve their differences peacefully.
They have also warned people against resorting to violence, especially when they suspect that their relatives are involved in witchcraft.
