CHIKWAWA, MALAWI — Two men, Evance Malefula and Fredrick Chiphaka, have been arrested for allegedly setting fire to the Chapananga Police Unit in Chikwawa, causing extensive damage to the police quarters, and looting property in the process, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
According to District Police Station Spokesman Sergeant Dickson Matemba, the suspects were identified during the incident when a mob from Chapananga Trading Centre invaded the police structure, demanding the release of murder suspect Chimwemwe Hamilton.
The mob became enraged upon learning that the suspect had been taken to Chikwawa Police Station, leading them to torch the police unit and steal various items.
Matemba stated that investigations are ongoing to apprehend additional individuals involved in the incident.
The value of the damaged properties is yet to be determined.
"The suspects will face charges of arson, theft, and malicious damage," Matemba confirmed.
Local police expressed concern over the incident and urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, as they will face legal consequences.
