GABORONE, Botswana — Founder of the Mabaila Foundation, Tshepang Mabaila, has pledged P10,000 ( about $736) from proceeds of a recent musical concert to support psychotherapy for the 8-year-old sole survivor of the devastating Easter bus crash in South Africa, writes Nkeletsang Morapedi .
On March 28, a bus carrying 46 passengers from Botswana crashed near Mokopane in Limpopo Province while on a pilgrimage to St. Engenas Church. The horrific accident claimed 45 lives, leaving an 8-year-old girl as the only survivor with serious injuries.
Nearly a month later, the Botswana community held a mass funeral to bid farewell to the victims, including the bus driver Ogaufi Noonyane who was laid to rest separately in Thamaga village.
During his foundation's annual Clap and Tap musical concert, Mabaila announced the P10,000 donation to aid the young survivor's reintegration and recovery after the deeply traumatic experience of losing loved ones, including her grandmother.
"The money will be used to support reintegration of the girl back to her normal sense after the traumatic experience she witnessed, especially losing her grandmother in the process," Mabaila told the concert attendees.
The Mabaila Foundation, a non-profit aimed at social upliftment, has undertaken initiatives such as sponsoring young people's rehabilitation efforts and tertiary education.
According to South African authorities, the bus driver lost control before crashing into the Mmamatlakala bridge, leaving the 8-year-old as the miraculous sole survivor amid national mourning in Botswana.
As she confronts survivor's trauma, the young girl will receive support through Mabaila's donation towards much-needed psychotherapy and reintegration into her community.
