Try Again FC Wins Refresh Fishing Bonanza in Likoma

LIKOMA, Malawi- Try Again Football Club emerged champions of a bonanza tournament organized by PACT Malawi's REFRESH project in Likoma District to sensitize fishermen against using illegal fishing gear, writes Oliver Malibisa.
The event which took place on Saturday, supported by USAID, aimed to disseminate messages on sustainable fishing practices through sports.
Try Again FC defeated Mighty Islanders 2-1 to claim the K100,000 top prize, while the runners-up received K50,000.
Nearly 2,000 people, including chiefs, gear owners, area development committees, youth and businesses attended Saturday's games at Likoma Community Ground.
Likoma District Fisheries Association Chair Martin Mjima thanked REFRESH, noting the timely awareness as some fishermen ignore recommended methods.
"Everyone must keep an eye and speak out against such malpractices, as tolerating them will result in suffering for all," Mjima said.
Fisheries official Clifton Botha warned overfishing could deplete Lake Malawi's stocks if illegal practices persist.
Botha also advised chiefs to remain impartial when handling offender cases, stressing traditional leaders' duty to enforce bylaws governing Beach Village Committees.
