Tragic Suicide Shakes Bangula Trading Centre, Nsanje District Community
A 25-year-old man commits suicide in Nsanje, prompting police to urge the community against taking such drastic measures.
NSANJE, Malawi – Shock and disbelief engulfed the residents of Bangula Trading Centre in the area of Senior Chief Mbenje, Nsanje District, on Thursday, as scores of people rushed to Nyang'a village upon hearing news of a tragic suicide, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Francis Changata Jr., a 25-year-old motorcycle mechanic, took his own life by hanging himself in a warehouse.
The incident was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, the Public Relations Officer for Nsanje Police Station.
Zalakoma stated that the deceased had been suspected of involvement in a theft case and was subsequently apprehended.
"He confessed to the public about the location of the stolen items. Upon recovering two speakers, he was released," Zalakoma explained.
According to Zalakoma, on June 29th, 2023, Changata Jr. was discovered hanging by a twine rope in a warehouse where scraps were kept by mechanics.
The matter was promptly reported to the Chiromo Police Post, leading to the arrival of police officers and a Clinical Officer from Kalemba Community Hospital.
Following a postmortem examination, the Clinical Officer concluded that the cause of death was suffocation, with no foul play suspected.
Francis Changata Jr., originally from Nyang'a village in the area of Senior Chief Mbenje, now leaves behind a community grappling with the aftermath of this tragedy.
The Nsanje District Police are urging the local community to refrain from resorting to such extreme measures when faced with challenges.
They stress that suicide is not a solution to problems and encourage individuals to seek help and support from available resources.
"We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our condolences to the family and community affected by this tragedy," expressed Sub-Inspector Zalakoma.
