Nsanje, Malawi - An 11-year-old boy, McDuff Mtope, tragically drowned in the Shire River near Dinde dock on Sunday, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Nsanje Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, has confirmed the incident, revealing that the young boy had left home to play with his friends without his parent's knowledge.
According to Sub-Inspector Zalakoma, the children went swimming in the Shire River when McDuff suddenly drowned.
The community initiated a search for him, and after several hours, his lifeless body was discovered in the river.
Upon receiving the report, the Nsanje Police Station attended the scene along with medical personnel from Nsanje District Hospital.
A postmortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation resulting from drowning.
In light of this tragic event, the police in the district are appealing to parents and guardians to closely monitor their children's activities to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
The loss of young McDuff Mtope has deeply saddened the community, serving as a reminder of the importance of water safety and the need for vigilant supervision when children engage in recreational activities near bodies of water.
