Tourism Wins Central Region Beach Soccer League
As champions, Tourism received K1.5 million and a spot to represent the central region at the national championship on May 4 in Mangochi.
SALIMA, Malawi — Tourism beach soccer team have been crowned champions of the 2023 Central Region Beach Soccer League following the final match on Saturday at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Salima, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
"Talent alone is not enough; we need to develop it and turn these players into future stars," said Peter Lipikwe, chairman of the Central Region Beach Soccer Association.
"As an association we are excited that finally we have crowned our champion which is Tourism and I just urged them to beef up their squad and prepare well ahead of the national championship next month in Mangochi."
Tourism head coach Fransisco Dodoma praised his players' efforts and said the focus now is on preparing for the national competition.
"Well, there is always room for improvement but as long as they gave 100% during the entire league, I have no complaints," Dodoma said.
"As of now our focus as a team is to do better in Mangochi."
Edward Mtaji, an executive member of the Beach Soccer Association of Malawi, said the incredible growth of the sport in the central region has potential to "drive change, attract a fresh fan base, inspire youngsters and provide opportunities and financial benefits for all concerned."
As champions, Tourism received K1.5 million and a spot to represent the central region at the national championship on May 4 in Mangochi.
Senga Bay finished second, earning K1 million, while Munale FC took third and 750,000 kwacha.
Sports analyst George Kamadyaapa said while Malawi lacks beach soccer infrastructure, the association should pursue corporate sponsorships, with the government providing additional support to develop the sport nationwide.
