"Timely Support," Police Laud Canal Project's Equipment Donation
Communities in both districts will use the canal to irrigate crops and practice commercial farming.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi -In an effort to equip the Malawi Police Service, the Shire Valley Transformation Programme (SVTP) on Wednesday donated equipment to the police to help combat crime along the canal construction area in Chikwawa, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Chikwawa Police Station Officer-In-Charge Carolyne Jere praised the SVTP for the "timely support they render to the law enforcers in the district."
She said the donation of 650 reflective jackets, 150 torches and 200 whistles "will go a long way in helping the police."
Jere appealed to others to follow the SVTP's example.
"There are a lot of things which as the police we are still lacking for us to provide security effectively," she said.
SVTP Coordinator Dr. Stanley Khaila said the donation aims to support the security agents patrolling the canal construction area day and night.
He urged the Community Policing Forums at Fombe and Chikhambi receiving the equipment to use it to curb theft near the construction site.
"It is our expectation that the equipment will serve the intended purpose in addressing the challenges the CPF members were going through in their work," Khaila said.
The SVTP is implementing a multi-billion kwacha irrigation project connecting Chikwawa and Nsanje.
