Three Northern Malawi Soccer Clubs Appoint New Head Coaches
Chitipa United, which narrowly avoided relegation last season, parted ways with head coach Christopher Nyambose after just seven months at the helm.
MZUZU, Malawi — Three soccer clubs in Malawi's Northern Region announced coaching changes this week as they prepare for the upcoming Super League season, with two first-time elite league coaches set to make their debuts, writes Victor Musongole.
Chitipa United, which narrowly avoided relegation last season, parted ways with head coach Christopher Nyambose after just seven months at the helm.
"The club remains committed to ensuring the team's stability and progress," General Secretary Watson Kabaghe said in a statement.
Mzuzu City Hammers appointed Steve Nkwinika as head coach, replacing Kondwa Ikwanga, who led the team to a top-four finish and the Castel Challenge Cup finals. Nkwinika joins from Mmbelwa Warriors with six years of coaching experience.
"We are excited to announce the appointment of Mr. Steven Nkwinika as our new Head Coach," said Benjamin Thole, the team's General Secretary.
Newly promoted Songwe Border United selected Enock Mhone to lead their inaugural Super League campaign. Mhone, who previously managed Topik Football Academy in Mzuzu, signed a one-year performance-based contract.
Both Mhone and Nkwinika recently obtained their CAF B licenses, meeting the Football Association of Malawi's requirements for Super League coaches.
They will make their elite league coaching debuts when the season begins.
The coaching changes follow similar moves by other Super League clubs, including Nyasa Big Bullets, who hired Peter Mponda, and Silver Strikers, who appointed Peter Mgangira.
Newly promoted Ekhaya FC is still seeking a replacement for James Chavula.
