Three Ethiopians Arrested After Vehicle Chase in Northern Malawi
Prosecutors expect to file formal charges once investigators complete their case, Manyungwa said.
MZIMBA, Malawi — Police arrested three Ethiopian nationals and a Malawian driver following a pursuit that began when villagers reported a suspicious vehicle with flat tires in northern Malawi's Mzimba district, writes Victoria Yande.
Authorities identified the Ethiopian nationals as Mubarike Temen, 27, Salamuni Aman, 18, and Tsedeke Girma, 18. All face charges of illegal entry into Malawi.
The incident occurred near Nashoni village when residents alerted police to a disabled black Ford Everest, Kafukule Police spokesman Masiku Manyungwa said.
The driver initially confronted villagers with a panga knife, wounding one person before fleeing into nearby brush, according to police.
"Local residents secured the vehicle's keys, the driver's license, and a phone before the suspect escaped," Manyungwa said.
A joint search operation by police and villagers led to the capture of the three Ethiopian nationals, who were reportedly hidden in surrounding vegetation.
Police also arrested Thomas Simbeye of Chitipa district, the alleged owner of the vehicle.
Authorities impounded the Ford Everest, registration number BW 7323, at Kafukule Police Station.
Prosecutors expect to file formal charges once investigators complete their case, Manyungwa said.
