Thabwa-Fatima Road Rehabilitation: A Long-Awaited Relief for Shire Valley Residents
Local Government, Unity, and Culture Minister Chimwendo Banda made the announcement on Saturday at Chinyanje Primary School Ground in Nsanje.
NSANJE, Malawi - The Malawian government has announced plans to rehabilitate the Thabwa-Fatima road to tarmac standard in order to alleviate transportation challenges faced by communities in the East Bank area of the Shire Valley districts of Nsanje and Chikwawa, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Local Government, Unity, and Culture Minister Chimwendo Banda made the announcement on Saturday at Chinyanje Primary School Ground in Nsanje.
He acknowledged that the people in the East Bank have long been victims of transportation difficulties when it comes to transporting their farm produce to Blantyre and other areas of the country.
Banda emphasized that the Tonse Alliance administration will soon commence the necessary work to address this problem.
"We understand the challenges faced by the people in the East Bank, and we are committed to improving their transportation infrastructure," he said.
In addition to the road rehabilitation, the minister also assured the residents of Senior Chief Mlolo's area, particularly around Chinyanje, that the government plans to engage a contractor for the construction of a mausoleum in honour of the late veteran politician Gwanda Chakuamba, who hailed from the Shire Valley.
"The Late Chakuamba was a political giant, not only for the Shire Valley but for the entire country, and he deserves great respect," Banda stated.
The political rally in Chinyanje was attended by senior party members, including Water and Sanitation Minister Abida Sidik Mia, Members of Parliament from Chikwawa and Nsanje, and various Chiefs.
The rehabilitation of the Thabwa-Fatima road and the construction of the mausoleum for the late Gwanda Chakuamba are part of the government's ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and honour the contributions of notable figures in Malawi's history.
