NSANJE, Malawi- Concerned by the escalating security lapse in the area, communities in Senior Chief Tengani in Nsanje have united to combat the issue, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The collective effort is being led by the newly formed Tengani Business Association (TBA), consisting of businessmen, farmers, and other community members.
Charles Mahosi, the interim chairperson of TBA, spoke to AfricaBrief on Friday, stating that the communities established the association due to the rampant cases of robberies that posed a significant risk to their lives.
Mahosi explained that the committee has taken the initial steps to draught by-laws aimed at enhancing security in the area.
"We cannot effectively address these issues without the implementation of by-laws, which we will submit to Senior Chief Tengani for review," he stated.
Mahosi further highlighted that the proposed by-laws would regulate the operations of bars, and the movement of livestock, and bolster community security structures.
The formation of such regulations is a crucial step in ensuring the safety and well-being of community members.
In recent times, the area has experienced a surge in robberies targeting local businesspeople. Earlier this month, unidentified criminals brutally murdered a renowned businessman, Tione Mkuzi, at his home and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
The incident has heightened concerns among residents, prompting them to take action and prioritise security measures.
The Tengani Business Association aims to address these security challenges by establishing a united front and implementing necessary measures to deter criminal activities.
The drafting of by-laws signifies the community's proactive approach to tackling the security lapse and fostering a safer environment for all residents in Senior Chief Tengani.
