Temwa Malawi Provides Over 300 Households in Yepe Village Development Committee with Water Filters to Combat Water-borne Diseases

Malawi: Temwa Malawi's Health and WASH programs have provided over 300 households in Yepe Village Development Committee (VDC) with improved access to safe and clean water through the use of water filters, writes Tionge Hara.
The communication officer, Sera Mtambo, said, "As Temwa we delivered the first batch, 150 water filters to the VDC on the 19th of January, 2023, and we hope and believe this will help amidst the outbreak of cholera because the people will be able to access clean water."
The WASH project for Yepe VDC aims to promote the use of water filters as one component of the project's design. A baseline survey of the project revealed that access to safe and clean water was a major challenge, leading to frequent occurrences of water-borne diseases.
Mtambo said, "We feel the T9 water filters are expected to significantly address this challenge."
Kondwani Botha, the organization's country director, said they are promoting the adoption of good-quality water and latrines in the surrounding areas.
He added, "We decided to deliver the water filters at YEPE VDC because the area is prone to waterborne diseases since they use the direct water from the lake."
The Ruarwe health centre receives more than five patients per week due to cholera, bilharzia, and other waterborne diseases.
The VDC and WASH committee members have been fully trained on the best usage and management practices of the water filters to ensure that households are effectively using them.
One of the beneficiaries, Rose Mary Gondwe from Yepe VDC, thanked Temwa Malawi for the initiative, saying, "Their coming in here is a blessing to us, after being trained, we learned a lot of things on how to take care of our healthy lives, as of now we are able to know the dos and don'ts for better healthier lives."
Apart from providing water filters, the VDC and WASH committee were also trained on other WASH best practices, such as proper usage of latrines, keeping household surroundings clean, proper food preparation, and washing of hands at appropriate times.
