Salima, Malawi - Tamtam, a local company, has announced its sponsorship of the Salima district football league with MK3 million, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
The announcement was made at the Salima LEA primary school grounds on Sunday. The move is part of Tamtam's quest to develop sports in the district.
In an interview, Member of Parliament for Salima Central, Gerald Kapiseni Phiri, commended the company for the sponsorship, citing that sport has proven to be a cost-effective and flexible tool for promoting peace and development objectives.
Phiri further stated that the league would help football achieve its fullest potential by realizing the goals of young people, individuals, and communities, as well as health, education, and social inclusion objectives.
He added that football had been a great platform to reach youths about the dangers of HIV and AIDS and disseminate messages of prevention.
Central Regional Football Association (CRFA), Chairman Austin Ajawa, said the league's entry into sports is a sign that the district and its partners aim to develop young talents and establish themselves as a force in the game.
"We have been inundated with investors and sponsors who are anxious to partner with us on the Salima League. It has huge potential to significantly uplift district football and make it even more powerful," said Ajawa.
The launch of the league will see Likumbo entertain Mgwilizano Football Club.
