Nsanje, Malawi - The South West Education Division (SWED) and the Malawi Secondary School Headteachers Association (MASSHA) joined forces to assist Makhanga Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Nsanje by donating assorted materials valued at K14 million, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The donation took place on Tuesday at Bangula Secondary School in the district.
Henry Gwede, Education Manager for SWED, emphasized that the materials were intended to aid in the recovery of educational activities that were severely disrupted by the effects of tropical cyclone Freddy earlier this year.
He underscored the significance of people coming together to help overcome the challenges faced by the school.
"The institution was submerged, and this donation will help in the recovery and replacement of learning and teaching materials that were destroyed," said Gwede.
Taibu Yuwa, Deputy Headteacher of Makhanga CDSS, expressed gratitude to SWED and MASSHA for their donations to the school.
He described the situation in March 2023 as pathetic, with the school being submerged in water for days.
Yuwa stated that the donation arrived at a time when the institution was struggling to acquire materials.
However, he urged the authorities to consider relocating the school to a safer area, as he feared that the donated items might be washed away by future floods.
"It would be much better to relocate the institution for the safety of the materials as well as the lives of the people," he said.
The donated items included textbooks, notebooks, stationery, and laboratory equipment, among others.
