SVADD Embarks on Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccinations

Chikwawa & Nsanje, Malawi: The Shire Valley Agriculture Development Division (SVADD) has embarked on a massive foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination exercise in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The exercise, which began on Tuesday, targets over 21,700 livestock in the two districts.
Abraham Banda, communications manager for SVADD, said the vaccination is a preventive measure against an outbreak of FMD.
"There has been no case of FMD in the division, but we are taking these preventive measures to ensure that the disease does not spread," Banda said.
He said the vaccination is being carried out by a team of veterinary experts from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Banda urged farmers in the two districts to cooperate with the vaccination team and ensure that their livestock is properly vaccinated.
He also warned farmers against selling their farm produce to vendors, saying that doing so would deprive them of the profits they are entitled to.
"Sell your farm produce at the recommended prices set by the government," Banda said.
"This is the only way you can ensure that you make a profit."
