SULOM Nominates Fleetwood Haiya for FAM Presidency
The nomination process is slated to conclude on November 16, 2023, with the crucial vote for the top position within the Malawi FA scheduled for December 16, 2023, in Mzuzu.
Lilongwe, Malawi — The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has officially nominated Fleetwood Haiya as their candidate for the presidency of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), writes Romeo Umali.
Haiya, who has already received endorsements from the Beach Soccer Association, National Coaches Association, and Women’s Football, emerges as a formidable contender in the upcoming FAM elections.
“We believe that Haiya is the right person to lead FAM into the future,” said SULOM Chairperson Tiyezani Liwewe in a statement.
“He has a proven track record of success in the game, both on and off the pitch. He is also a visionary leader who is committed to developing Malawian football at all levels.”
Haiya, who is currently the SULOM Vice Chairperson, is a former Malawian international goalkeeper and has coached several clubs in the Malawian top flight. He is also a successful businessman and philanthropist.
In an interview, Haiya outlined his vision for FAM if elected president.
“I want to create a FAM that is transparent, accountable, and inclusive,” Haiya said.
“I want to focus on developing Malawian football from the grassroots up. I also want to make FAM more financially sustainable so that we can invest more in our players, coaches, and infrastructure.”
Haiya is expected to face stiff competition from the incumbent FAM President, Walter Nyamilandu.
Nyamilandu has been at the helm of FAM for two decades.
“I am confident that I have the experience and the vision to lead FAM into the next phase of its development,” Nyamilandu said in a recent press briefing.
“I have a proven track record of success, and I am committed to working with all stakeholders to take Malawian football to the next level.”
