Subpar Construction at Mtowe College Draws Government Ire
Traditional Authority Nyachikadza urged authorities to speed up the project so district youth can learn skills nearby.
NSANJE, Malawi - The government says it is not impressed with the construction works of the K800 million Kwacha Mtowe Community Technical College in Nsanje, which is of substandard quality, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
"This is far below the money paid," Minister of Labour Agnes Nyalonje said Friday after inspecting the construction site.
She described the construction as very substandard and incomplete.
Nyalonje revealed the Mtowe budget was the same as colleges in Chiradzulo and Machinga, where construction meets higher standards done by the contractor.
The minister pointed out the Mtowe work is not commensurate with the money paid to the contractor.
She said it raises more questions than answers as to how the supervising team authorized contractor payments for the subpar work she witnessed.
"There is no evidence the whole money was used and asking the government to pay," Nyalonje wondered.
Nyalonje assured Nsanje residents a joint team of officials from TEVETA, her ministry, chiefs and the District Commissioner's office will revisit the infrastructure and make recommendations.
"This college was supposed to be completed already for Nsanje youths to use," she said.
Traditional Authority Nyachikadza urged authorities to speed up the project so district youth can learn skills nearby.
"Tengani College doesn't cater to the whole district," the traditional leader said.
